Facilities

Chester Court was converted to cooperative ownership in 1981 with 114 units. The building now enjoys a 94% owner occupancy rate. Over the years, the cooperative has boldly created superb amenities and facilities that greatly enhance the quality of life of each of its residents. Because of the cooperative’s strong financials, during its entire history no shareholder has ever been assessed even one penny for the construction of any of the building’s amenities, or for any other reason. Yet, Chester Court’s maintenance is still considerably lower compared to other similarly sized cooperatives.

Years ago, Chester Court created a verdant and colorful garden oasis on the roof overlooking the downtown skyline of Manhattan. In its early days, it was planted, watered and lovingly maintained by members of the House and Garden Committee. As the garden grew, an automatic irrigation system was installed and professional landscapers were hired to bring it to the next level. But the cooperative did not stop there. When our 25 year-old roof needed to be replaced, Chester Court created an even more spectacular and expansive roof garden and deck designed by a leading urban landscape architect and designer. The new roof garden and deck contains various areas, both shaded and open, where residents can sit and relax, dine or sunbathe. Click here to see pictures of the Roof Garden and Deck.

Chester Court’s Multi-Purpose Room is normally configured as a half-court basketball court and squash/racquet ball court. Residents also use it to play ping-pong, do gymnastics, yoga and other exercise activities. Full size exercise mats are provided. But what makes this room so special is that it can be transformed into an entertainment space for residents to use for a nominal fee for their own private events, such as children’s birthday parties, Passover seders and Thanksgiving dinners. The transformation of the Multi-Purpose Room is complete when the building staff rolls out a wall to wall carpet, furnishes the room with tables and chairs provided by the building, and with incandescent designer floor lamps so that the room’s bright overhead fluorescent lights can be turned off, giving the room a warm and magical feel. Adjacent to the Multi-Purpose Room is a kitchen with counter-space, a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a kitchen sink and a nearby bathroom. The Multi-Purpose Room is also where Chester Court hosts a magic show every Halloween for the many children who live in the building, and their guests, which is followed by a party in the lobby with food and drinks donated by residents and catered by the cooperative. The Multi-Purpose Room is also the forum for the cooperative’s annual and informational meetings. Click here to see photos of the multi-purpose room.

In conjunction with the construction of the Multi-Purpose Room, the cooperative built a climate controlled state of the art full service exercise room equipped with top of the line equipment, including treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bicycles, a FIT-3 Multi-Gym station, a Strength Dip and Chin Assist machine as well as free weights and other equipment. The Exercise Room contains two flat screen television sets mounted on the wall that can be watched and listened to with your own personal headphones connected to jacks attached to the aerobic machines, all of which have the built-in audio/video system, Cardio Theater. Natural light enters the Exercise Room through two large skylights in the ceiling. A large glass window separates the Exercise Room from the Multi-Purpose Room so you can work out while your child plays in the Multi-Purpose Room. There is a nominal fee to use the Exercise Room. One of the most loved facilities at Chester Court is the children’s playroom which is great for your child’s playdates and for days when the weather is bad and your child (and you) just need a place to escape. This colorful and fun room has a loft built by a former shareholder with a built-in clubhouse and slide. The room is furnished with all types of toys, such as a play kitchen, doll house and Thomas the Tank Engine table, tracks, trains and other accessories. The room has a children’s table and chairs for arts and crafts or to just sit and read a book from one of the many books in the children’s library also located in the playroom. Adjacent to the playroom is Chester Court’s laundry room furnished with top of the line card-operated washers and dryers. The laundry room is separated from the playroom by a large glass wall so that you or your babysitter can watch your child play while doing laundry. The rates for the washers and dryers are very reasonably priced. Residents can still install washers and dryers in their own apartments. Click here to see photos of the Laundry Room.

In the building’s brightly lit and meticulously maintained basement, near the children’s playroom, laundry room and superintendent’s office, is a large room where residents can store their bicycles. For added security, cameras are installed in and around the bicycle room which are connected to a digital video recorder to record the room’s comings and goings. There is plenty of storage space at Chester Court located near the other facilities in the basement. Each resident is assigned their own storage bins. For added security, residents can only enter the storage room with a member of the building’s staff.

Between the building’s 24 hour doorman service and a state of the art video security system, Chester Court is a safe and secure place to live. Cameras, which are connected to a digital video recorder in the superintendent’s office, capture and record events throughout the common areas of the building, including all entrances and in the elevators, and up and down West 89th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in the vicinity of the building. Computer monitors at the doorman’s station and in the superintendent’s office enable the building’s staff to observe activities in and around the building.
